Cougars Dominate at the Regional Championships


(11/2/10) In NCCAA Division II South Regional play, Clearwater Christian College won two of three possible championship berths.

Women's Volleyball


The CCC volleyball team traveled to Winston-Salem, NC, over the weekend to compete for their 18th NCCAA South Region Championship. Six regional teams participated in this year’s tournament hosted by Piedmont Baptist College.

Clearwater went undefeated in regional play during the regular season to secure the first seed heading into the tournament. On the first day of pool play, the Cougars took the first match from Florida Christian 25-8; 25-8; 25-6 and the second from Piedmont Baptist College, 25-8; 25-5; 25-15. By going undefeated on day one, the Clearwater team secured a bye in the first round of the single elimination tournament during the second day. Playing in the semi-finals, the Cougars again won in three straight sets over Trinity College of Florida, 25-16; 25-20; 25-7 placing them into the championship match against Toccoa Falls College. In the final game, the Cougars took the championship match in three straight sets, 25-14; 25-10; 25-22.

Clearwater’s offense dominated throughout the tournament with outstanding set selection by senior setter Elisabeth Ennis. Amanda Bucklin, Richelle Bucklin, and Emma Kile combined with over 10 kills per game. The CCC defense dominated the matches as well with some outstanding back row play by Danielle Heffernan and Amanda Ison. The four match sweep made Clearwater the 2010 South Regional Champions. This is the 18th time the Clearwater volleyball team has captured this title since joining the NCCAA II in 1990.

Clearwater seniors Danielle Heffernan and Kayla Whiteley were given Honorable Mention All-Region honors. Senior Elisabeth Ennis, sophomore Richelle Bucklin, and junior Emma Kile, were all named to the First Team All-Region. Emma was also named the South Region’s Most Valuable Player of the Year. The accolades continued as Coach Denny was named the South Region Coach of the Year.

The Lady Cougars finish out their regular season play on Tuesday, November 2 against NAIA opponent Webber International University.

Men's Soccer


Clearwater Christian College defeated Toccoa Falls College 2-0 on Saturday night to win the NCCAA South Region Championship for the 2nd year in a row. The Cougars came out strong in the opening minutes, dominating possession as Toccoa Falls sat back in a defensive shell looking to frustrate Clearwater and counterattack. Clearwater broke through in the 6th minute as Tyler Spraul scored the opening goal off a penalty kick. Clearwater continued to keep the majority of possession and was rewarded when Brian Waddle added a second goal in the 39th minute off a cross from Dexter Hollenbach to put the Cougars up 2-0 at the half.

Spurred on a by a boisterous crowd, Toccoa Falls came out of the half with a different style of play looking to push more players forward to try and get back into the match. As a result, the Cougars were able to find more space to attack and, despite creating a number of chances, were unable to finish their opportunities and put the game out of reach.

CCC had a decided advantage in shots on the match, and goalkeeper Anthony DeRosse earned his 9th shutout of the season. With the win, the Cougars improve to 12-4 on the season.

Following the match, the following players were honored by earning All-Region honors: Jeff Crews, Anthony DeRosse, Tyler Spraul, and Matt Wells were named 1st Team All-Region; and Adam Beam, Brian Chidirikire, Drew Custer, Lucas Hollenbach, Juan Robayo, and Paul Vanaman were named 2nd Team All-Region. Tyler Spraul was also named the South Region Player of the Year for the second straight season, and Coach Whitaker was named South Region Coach of the Year.

With the win, the Cougars automatically qualified for the NCCAA D-2 National Tournament coming up on November 10-13 in Kissimmee, Florida. Look for more details on that tournament coming soon.

Women's Soccer


The women's soccer team traveled to Toccoa Falls, Georgia for the NCCAA South Region championship game on Saturday. Toccoa Falls College had earned their way into the championship game by defeating Atlanta Christian College earlier in the week in a penalty shootout. TFC and the Cougars split their regular season matches, with both teams winning at home.

Clearwater jumped on top in the third minute of action when Madeline Tewes scored her second goal of the season with the assist from Andrea Williamson. The Cougars played solid defense for the rest of the half, Ahna Boley made several outstanding saves in goal, and they led 1-0 at the intermission. Toccoa Falls quickly scored two goals in the first 5 minutes of the second half to take the lead. The Cougars made a good effort to score the equalizer but were unable to find the back of the net, leaving the final score at 2-1.

Following the match, the following players were honored by earning All-Region honors: Andrea Dobbs, Anna Lufkin, Whitney Redemann, and Lydia Twigg were named 1st Team All-Region. Senior Andrea Dobbs also won the South Region Player of the Year. Coach Bates was named South Region Coach of the Year.
