Cougars Halted at Regionals in Elimination Game to Florida Christian College

On Friday afternoon, Clearwater was eliminated from the NCCAA DII South Regional Tournament after losing to Florida Christian College 5-0.

In the seventh match up this season against the Suns, Clearwater couldn't get anything going offensively off of starting pitcher Nick Beavers, who threw a complete game, striking out one, scattering seven hits, and allowed two free passes in the shut out.

The Suns scored in four different innings. In the top of the first, catcher Erick Figueroa scored on a Cougars error off the bat of Ramon Cedeno, taking an early 1-0 lead.

Figueroa and Eric Santamaria each knocked in a run each in the third inning, that gave the Suns a 3-0 advantage. Mark Vidal hit an RBI triple in the fourth, and designated hitter Vince Tome hit an RBI single in the seventh, giving FCC a 5-0 lead.

Freshman Jake Reidy and sophomore Justin Capela collected two hits a piece for Clearwater. The Cougars stranded seven runners, including leaving the bases loaded in the third inning.

Sophomore Will Kirby (2-10) took the loss after throwing 6 1/3 innings, giving up thirteen hits, one walk, and struck out one. He allowed four earned runs. Junior Kyle Baitz relieved Kirby in the seventh, and induced a pop up and a fly out to end the inning, stranding three Suns runners on base.

The Cougars have been eliminated from the NCCAA DII South Regional Tournament after the 5-0 loss. They will await the possibility of an at-large bid to the NCCAA DII College World Series in Mason, Ohio, in which they will find out early this coming week. If the Cougars get the bid, it will be the second time in three seasons making it to the World Series. In 2011, the Cougars lost in the national championship to conference rival Toccoa Falls College.
