Suns Take Nightcap and Series


In the second game of the twin bill on Saturday afternoon, the Cougars couldn't muster together enough runs as the Suns pulled out the win, 7-3.

The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning, and Florida Christian was the first to score. Andres Cancio, who finished 3-4 with three runs scored, led off with a single, followed by a double from Erick Figueroa. Eric Santamaria and Elim Perritte collected RBI's in the inning for the Suns.

In the bottom of the fourth, freshman Jake Reidy led the Cougars off with a double, and scored on a single off the bat of junior Joel Felten which was his 19th RBI of the season.

The Suns broke it open in the top of the sixth, scoring four runs on six hits. They also added another run in the seventh, expanding their lead to 7-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Junior Jon Rivera led off the seventh with a single, and junior David Edwards singled, putting runners at first and second with one out. Reidy then doubled, scoring both Rivera and Edwards, making it a 7-3 deficit.

Freshman Stephen Martin (2-6) threw 5 1/3 innings in the loss, allowing six earned runs on eleven hits, and collected a pair of strikeouts.

In his fourteenth appearance of the season, freshman Taylor Hill threw 1 2/3 innings of relief, allowing one earned run on three hits and two walks.

The Cougars are now 1-4 in the conference, and 8-28 overall. The Suns improve to 3-5 in conference play.

Clearwater will host Eckerd College on Tuesday evening at Jack Russell Stadium for their last midweek game of the season. The Cougars will look to even the season series after winning the series in 2012, 2-1. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00pm.



Notes: The Cougars defense turned four double plays...Reidy's two doubles were his eleventh and twelfth of the season...Felten stole his eleventh bag, tying Velez for a team high...seven of the nine starters for Clearwater recorded base hits...Rivera collected a base hit in each game of the series.
