Royals Sweep Twin Bill
In the second game of the double header at Warner University Saturday afternoon, the Royals plated eleven runs on nine hits and five Cougars errors.
Clearwater took the lead in the top of the first inning after junior David Edwards was walked to start the game, followed by a successful bunt for a base hit by junior Jefte Velez. After freshman Jake Reidy was hit by pitch to load the bases, junior Noel Thomas hit a single that scored two runs, giving the Cougars a 2-0 spread.
Warner answered in the bottom half of the first after second baseman Chris Mejia batted in Dylan Gross on a Cougars error, making it a 2-1 game. Freshman Wade Irwin pitched himself out of the inning after getting two Royals hitters to pop up to end the threat.
After holding the Cougars scoreless in the top of the second, Warner was back at it in bottom of the second. After a walk, single, and a hit batter, Gross hit an RBI single followed by Mejia's two RBI single, giving the Royals a 4-2 lead.
With one out in the top of the fourth, junior Jon Rivera was walked, followed by freshman Taylor Hill's single to right field. Freshman Chris Zweifach recorded a single, loading the bases for the top of the order. Edwards singled scoring both Rivera and Hill, tying the game at 4-4. Velez then collected his second hit of the day, scoring Zweifach, and giving the Cougars a 5-4 margin.
Unfortunately, that was it for the Cougars offense in the game, and Warner went on to score seven runs in their last three at bats, running away with the win 11-5.
Andrew Yanes went five innings, giving up seven hits and issuing five free passes, along with five earned runs, and picked up the win for Warner.
Irwin (1-4) threw 3 2/3 innings, allowing four free passes, giving up seven hits and four earned runs, in the loss.
Clearwater is now 6-21 overall, and Warner has won two in a row with an overall record of 15-20 record.
Clearwater will travel to Miami on Tuesday for a midweek contest against St. Thomas University, the #13 ranked team in the country in the NAIA Top 25 Preseason Coaches Poll. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:00pm.
Notes: Velez had his ninth multi-hit game this season...Baitz made his seventh appearance out of the bullpen...each team left eight runners on base...Clearwater's defense made five errors.
