Cougars Strand Seven Runners In Scoring Position in 3-2 Loss

In the front half of the doubleheader at Drysdale Field, Flagler College pulled out a 3-2 victory over Clearwater Christian College.

Freshman Brandon Gonzalez took the loss on the mound after throwing a complete game, striking out four, surrendering eight hits, and giving up three runs, with just two earned.

The Saints got on the board in the bottom of the first inning, after Nick Kranick hit a one out triple, and then scored on a single from designated hitter Nick Radomski, making it 1-0.

Flagler put two more across in the bottom of the third after a leadoff walk issued to Kranick, followed by a single from Brett Moreland, and then a 2 RBI single from Jake Hanson, spreading the lead to 3-0.

Meanwhile, Clearwater stranded runners at second and third base in both the top of the second and top of the fourth innings. Down 3-0 in the top of the fifth, junior Jon Rivera led off the inning with a single. With two outs and Rivera at second, freshman Chris Zweifach drove him in with a single. Freshman Jake Reidy followed up with an RBI double, scoring Zweifach, cutting the lead to 3-2. Reidy was stranded after junior Joel Felten lined out to second.

The Cougars had another opportunity in the top of the sixth after freshman Caleb Jordan singled and junior Noel Thomas walked to start the inning off Saints relief pitcher Taylor Nelson. Designated hitter Peter Liloia IV laid down a successful sacrifice bunt, putting Jordan at third, and Thomas at second. With the Saints infield pulled in to try to prevent a run, they did just that, as Rivera hit a groundball to the shortstop, recording the second out of the inning. Flagler went to the bullpen again calling on Beau Beadreau to face sophomore Justin Capela, who struck out to end the threat, stranding both Jordan and Thomas.

Saints starting pitcher Chris Patrick picked up the win, going five strong, striking out six, giving up four hits, walking three, and allowing two earned runs.

Flagler picked up game two, 3-2.
