Lady Cougars Open Season with a Win Over SEU

The women's soccer team opened the 2012 regular season in dramatic fashion on the road against former NCCAA DII south region rival Southeastern University. Scoring the final three goals of the game gave the Lady Cougars a 3-2 victory over a quality NAIA opponent.

Southeastern controlled much of the play throughout the first half, and they were able to create a few good scoring chances. CCC goalkeeper, Kim Vilchez made some good saves but the Lady Cougars gave up a goal and were down 1 goal at halftime.

The second half was a much more even contest with both teams able to possess the ball and create chances to score. Midway through the second half the Fire found the back of the net to take a 2-0 lead. Shortly after the Fire's second goal the Lady Cougars scored as well, but the referee called a foul and disallowed the goal.

Down 2-0 the Lady Cougars never gave up and were pressuring the Fire defense in the games final 20 minutes. With 2:01 remaining in the game, freshman Jamie Ray scored to cut Lady Cougars deficit to only one goal. With only seconds left to play the referee awarded a direct kick to the Lady Cougars. Whitney Redemann sprinted to the ball and was able to beat the keeper to tie the game with only 3 seconds remaining on the clock.

Golden goal overtime did not last long. Sophomore Alicyn Bradley crossed a ball in from the right flank and two Lady Cougars were at the back post waiting to put it in the goal. Kelsey Redemann scored the games final goal just 5 minutes and 10 seconds into overtime to give the Lady Cougars the 3-2 win.

This was the first win for the women's soccer program over Southeastern since 2005. Coach Bates had this to say about the big win "Southeastern is a tremendous team, but even down two goals we never gave up. I'm proud of the way we fought hard to the end of the game, and in the end, all the hard work paid off."

The Lady Cougars play again on August 25 when they play the Alumni game.
