Cougars Drop 2-0 Match to Florida Southern
(10/15/11) Clearwater Christian College lost another touch match 2-0 to Florida Southern College (NCAA II) on Saturday night. The Cougars played well in the loss, frustrating the Mocs attack and creating several good scoring chances of their own.
The Cougar defense played well led by goalkeeper Anthony DeRosse who came up with 12 saves in the match. The first goal of the match came 10 minutes in when Luke Jenner scored off a rebound on a Mocs corner kick. The best opportunity of the match for the Cougars came in the 15th minute when forward Seth Dempsey picked off a pass in the offensive third but his shot was pushed away at the last second by the FSC keeper.
The Cougars continued to play tough and had several opportunities to equalize on counter-attacks in the 2nd half. The Cougars were able to contain the Mocs leading scorer Zach Hofstetter for most of the night until the 73rd minute when he redirected a cross past DeRosse for the clinching goal.
This was the final regular season home match, and before the match, the team's 5 seniors (Drew Custer, Mac Hildebrand, Walter Scharf, Matt Tewes and Matt Wells) were recognized for their outstanding careers and contributions to the Cougar soccer program.
Clearwater will next travel to Southeastern University on Tuesday, October 18 for a 7:00 p.m. match against the Fire.
