The Political Club hosted a debate between the two Florida State Senate candidates, Republican Jack Latvala and Democrat Nina Hayden. The event was attended by CCC students, outside supporters, and a surprise guest, current Pinellas County Commissioner, Republican Neil Brickfield. Republican Jack Latvala Democrat Nina Hayden According to Michael Kleer, president of the Political Club, “This was the first time the Political Club hosted a debate, and even though it was in the midst of final exam preparations, we received positive feedback from the roughly 30 students who attended. A blogger from St. Petersburg and a reporter from the St. Petersburg Times came out to cover the debate, as well as the entourage that accompanied both candidates.” The Political Club presented seven questions to each candidate, and after they responded to each question, the floor was opened for students and others to ask questions. The questions from the floor were pertinent to several key issues confronting Florida voters. Even though the candidates differed on basic arguments, they each gave their point of view in an honest and forthright manner. The Political Club was pleased with the event and looks forward to future meetings and debates held on campus.
