The faculty and staff of Clearwater Christian College are pleased to announce the successful commencement of the Class of 2013. On Saturday, May 4, friends, family, and supporters gathered at the Starkey Road Baptist Church in Seminole to participate in the crowning moment for the graduating class. Two graduate and 102 undergraduate students received their diplomas after successfully completing the requirements for their degrees. President John F. Klem presided over the ceremony with board member Dr. Billy Gotcher of the Berea Baptist Church in Palm Harbor reading scripture and giving the invocation, and Chairman Clay Custer giving the benediction. A unique feature of this year’s ceremony was the playing of the bagpipes as the faculty entered and exited the auditorium.

One of the most prestigious elements of the CCC commencement ceremony is the presentation of the Arthur E. Steele Award. This honor, selected by the faculty and staff, is awarded to a graduating senior based upon his or her service and leadership activities. Pastoral Studies graduate Bothvill Valcin, from Hallandale, FL, was this year’s recipient for exemplary character and dedication. Much like Dr. Steele, Valcin pursued his degree as a married student with children, and active member of the United States military as a Marine. Following this award, 2013 class representative John Blakemore, presented the school with a class gift of a scholarship program for CCC students who wish to participate in summer mission endeavors.

This year, five graduating ROTC cadets were honored with a standing ovation by the entire assembly. This included Air Force cadets Renee Crane and Matt Treptau and Army cadets Matt Auchtung, Andrew Redcay, and Joseph White. All five cadets were commissioned as 2nd Lieutenants in their respective branches in separate ceremonies over the weekend. In attendance and representing the Army Suncoast Battalion at the University of South Florida where CCC student participate in ROTC was MSG John T. Brennan.

The commencement address was given by Bible Professor Mr. Robert W. Carver. ‘Coach C’ has been part of the CCC family since 1977 and was the first faculty member given the opportunity to give the graduate address. In his message, he compared the Apostle Paul’s departure from the saints in Ephesus to that of the 2013 class leaving their alma mater by the fond memories of the past and the need to press forward into the future.

Congratulations, Class of 2013!
