Dr. Draper Published in Educational Journal

Dr. Mary Draper
Dr. Mary Draper, vice president for academic affairs and professor of education, has been published in the Journal for Christian Educators, a journal produced by the American Association of Christian Schools. The article, entitled “Incorporating Group Work into Your Teaching,” appeared in the Fall, 2011, edition of the journal.

Initially presenting a workshop on incorporating group learning into teaching at the Tennessee Christian Education Association, the AACS approached Dr. Draper about writing the article due to the positive response from her session. “I am concerned about teachers that simply follow the curriculum they are given, never using any other good methods for teaching or trying anything new,” she said. “Group learning, also called cooperative or collaborative learning, encourages high achievement for students. The competition stops and working together begins.”

Not limited to elementary or secondary education, Dr. Draper presents teaching techniques that are relevant to all levels of education. “Cooperative learning is a method that extends beyond the boundaries of school and into college, the work arena, and every area of life. Critical thinking can be forged through good cooperative learning.”

“My hope is that no matter what curriculum a Christian school teacher is given, he or she would find that at least one of these methods in the article would help him or her be a better teacher and would engage the students in higher-order learning, basic review, or enrichment.”

Dr. Richard Stratton, president of CCC, said, “I am thankful for Dr. Draper’s effective leadership of our faculty and for her desire to have a positive impact on Christian schools through workshop presentations and now through this article. We are indeed blessed to have Dr. Draper as part of the leadership team at CCC.”
