On Saturday, September 24, over 150 Clearwater Christian College students, staff, faculty, alumni, and supporters participated in the Fourth Annual Miles for Hope ‘Moving Towards a Cure’ Clearwater Brain Tumor Awareness Event in honor of alumna Alyssa McLanahan Stolvoort. Miles for Hope was founded by Barb and Bob Gibbs to fund brain tumor research and clinical trials. They also provide travel assistance to brain tumor patients participating in clinical trials. Senior Jon McLanahan organized the team from CCC in honor of his sister, Alyssa. A part-time financial representative and intern at Northwestern Mutual, Jon wanted to combine his community service requirements with a cause that personally changed his life. “My sister passed away on July 16, 2011, after battling brain cancer for two and a half years. Once I found Miles for Hope, I knew I had found a way to honor Alyssa.” In less than a month, Jon had raised support, found runners, and organized this fitting tribute to his sister. Jon’s team, Alyssa’s Wish, raised almost $10,000 and came in fourth place on amount of money donated. Jon also placed as the fourth highest individual fundraiser. In total, Miles for Hope raised over $151,000 for support of brain cancer awareness; Team Alyssa’s Wish was proud to be a part. The Miles for Hope run included 100k, 50k, and 25k runs, a 5k Walk/Run, and a 1m Fun Run. Participants were invited to run, walk, or bike for the cause.
