Cougars Participate in Post Season Competition and Earn National Recognitions

Clearwater Christian College men’s and women’s basketball teams racked up solid records for the 2010-2011 season as both teams earned a spot in their respective south region tournaments held by the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Division II. The men’s team won their first game, but lost to Atlanta Christian College in the regional semifinals, 90-66. After winning their final regional game

against Atlanta Christian College (45-42), the Lady Cougars secured a spot in the NCCAA II National Championships and advanced with the number 5 seeding.

During the three-day event held at Ohio Christian University, the Lady Cougars played hard, but were not able to capture the national banner. Their third game against Hillsdale College ended with a 77-55 win and guaranteed the 7th place spot in the nation.

Dr. Richard Stratton, president of CCC, who was present at the tournament said, “Our young ladies played hard and were a great testimony throughout their three games. I am thankful for their basketball skills, but I am more grateful for their desire to use this sport to honor their Savior. Coach Halstead did a great job with the team throughout the season, and led them well during the national tournament; the success and spirit of the team are certainly reflective of her capable leadership.”

Athletic director, James Whitaker said, “These four players have been a huge part of our teams' success this season and are well-deserving of this significant accomplishment. It has been exciting to see them grow both on the court and in their walk with Christ.”

Coach Champion states, “Having four players selected for all-region honors is a credit to the unselfish style of basketball that we played this year. Each of the players led the team in scoring at some point of the season. Matt had an outstanding season, averaging 10 points per game and was our best defensive player. Troy, as our only senior, provided leadership as co-captain, averaged 10 points per game, and played with a lot of ‘grit’ during the season. Bryan, our other co-captain, was a solid defender, rebounder who also averaged 10 points a game and was a vital part of our team’s success. Todd averaged 14 points a game and was our leading rebounder. He played well in our big wins and was aptly acknowledged by the region coaches as region MVP. As South Region MVP Todd was up for all-American recognition and at the National Tournament was selected as a first team NCCAA Div. II all-American. Bryan Spears balanced basketball, books, and work scholarship well as he received national recognition as he was honored with a Scholar-Athlete Award for having a GPA of 3.4, or higher. I am extremely proud of these players for being honored with these well deserved post-season awards.”
