Light the Night Walk (Sigma Delta Chi)
On Saturday evening, November 6, SDC walked with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) in their annual Light the Night Walk to raise community awareness of cancer, leukemia, and lymphoma. They chose this community outreach because of a personal connection to a little girl battling a rare form of leukemia.
In March, Rima Boulos was playing soccer and attending school like the other children, but after a routine medical checkup, Rima’s life was turned upside down. After being diagnosed with leukemia, Rima began an intense regimen of doctor’s visits, health screening, and treatment. SDC walked to honor Rima.
Andrea Williamson, the Community Service Representative for SDC, is a good friend and mentor for Rima. “When I found out about Rima being diagnosed with leukemia,” said Andrea, “I began researching different runs and events to promote Leukemia Awareness. I was looking for events in the Tampa/St. Pete area when I found Light the Night and immediately wanted to be involved. I talked with Anna Lufkin (our SDC president) about it and she wanted us to start a group immediately. We announced our intent to participate in the walk during Greek meetings and in chapel. Word started spreading and soon we had over 20 people signed up to walk!”
The walk is called “Light the Night” because each walker is given either a red, gold, or white balloon corresponding to the reason they walk. The red balloon is given to those walking in honor of someone, the gold balloon is for those walking in memory of someone who has died of leukemia, and the white balloon is for those who have survived leukemia or are currently battling the disease. Each balloon is attached to a small light that “lights the night” as they walk. “The walk is done at sunset,” Andrea said, “All the people around can see the red, gold, and white balloons lit up and bouncing down the road. Then they see the huge groups of people walking. It’s such an amazing sight. While walking, I looked around and saw all the white balloons around me. It really humbled me as an individual when I saw how many of them were walking, and it was not only for themselves, but for everyone else’s suffering, as well.”
In the end, over 40 CCC students walked in the Light the Night Walk. They raised over $600, $100 over their goal. All donations go directly towards cancer research through the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. In total, the Pinellas County Light the Night Walk raised over $89,000 for cancer research. SDC is proud to have a part in that miracle.
