Season Review (2008-2009)

The 2008-2009 Lady Cougars basketball season opened with an exhibition match against the CCC Alumni team on November 8, 2008 and ended in a whirlwind national tournament at Kentucky University in Grayson, Kentucky.

Going in to the season with the loss of three key starters, Coach Dean Williams focused on establishing a tough team defense in a team made up of 7 returning players and 6 newcomers. He said, "Everyone on the roster will be able to contribute."

This was Coach Williams fourth year as head coach for the women's team at CCC. Matt Kellogg, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, was assistant coach. The two goals for the 2008-2009 season were to make it to nationals and win the South Region.

The anthem "Be strong and do it" appears on the back of each player's sweatshirt-a sentiment that defined the season. With a win at home against Southeastern and the number 1 seed in the National tournament, the Lady Cougars did just that.

2008-2009 notable players were: Alyssa Hallice, with an average of 10 points per game, and graduating seniors Laura Banks and Jennifer Ramos, both starters and excellent contributors at the end of the season.

With added skill and new faces, the 2008-2009 Lady Cougars were a solid team. "Every team in our region was pretty good, so it wasn't easy. With the addition of new players mixed with our returners, we had the ingredients to be a very deep and talented team." (Coach Williams)

Cougar Spotlight

Playing sports at CCC is a wonderful opportunity to not only represent the college, but also to play for God and His glory. Team devotions before practice gets the day started "on the right foot" so to speak. Our coach always challenges us to develop spiritually as well as physically. Being a Christian athlete carries a huge responsibility: being able to give your all not for yourself or for personal glory, but for the team and, more importantly, for God's glory.
