Cougars Claim 2nd Straight South Region Championship
(10/30/10) Clearwater Christian College defeated Toccoa Falls College 2-0 on Saturday night to win the NCCAA South Region Championship for the 2nd year in a row.
The Cougars came out strong in the opening minutes, dominating possession as Toccoa Falls sat back in a defensive shell looking to frustrate Clearwater and counterattack. Clearwater broke through in the 6th minute as Tyler Spraul scored the opening goal off a penalty kick. Clearwater continued to keep the majority of possession and were rewarded when Brian Waddle added a second goal in the 39th minute off a cross from Dexter Hollenbach to put the Cougars up 2-0 at the half.
Spurred on a by a boisterous crowd, Toccoa Falls came out of the half with a different style of play looking to push more players forward to try and get back into the match. As a result, the Cougars were able to find more space to attack and, despite creating a number of chances, were unable to finish their opportunities and put the game out of reach.
CCC had a decided advantage in shots on the match, and goalkeeper Anthony DeRosse earned his 9th shutout of the season. With the win, the Cougars improve to 12-4 on the season.
Following the match, the following players were honored by earning All-Region honors. Jeff Crews, Anthony DeRosse, Tyler Spraul, and Matt Wells were named 1st Team All-Region; and Adam Beam, Brian Chidirikire, Drew Custer, Lucas Hollenbach, Juan Robayo, and Paul Vanaman were named 2nd Team All-Region. Tyler Spraul was also named the South Region Player of the Year for the 2nd straight season, and Coach Whitaker was named South Region Coach of the Year.
With the win, the Cougars automatically qualified for the NCCAA D-2 National Tournament coming up on November 10-13 in Kissimmee, Florida. Look for more details on that tournament coming soon.
