Cougars Win Regional Tournament
The CCC Volleyball Team traveled to Winston-Salem, NC over the weekend to compete for their 18th NCCAA South Region Championship. Six regional teams participated in this year’s tournament hosted by Piedmont Baptist College.
Clearwater went undefeated in regional play during the regular season to secure the first seed heading into the tournament. During pool play, the Cougars took the first match from Florida Christian 25-8; 25-8; 25-6. During the second match of the first day CCC won over Piedmont Baptist College, 25-8; 25-5; 25-15. By going undefeated on day one, the Clearwater team had a bye in the first round of the single elimination tournament during the second day. Playing in the semi-finals, the Cougars again won in three straight sets over Trinity College of Florida, 25-16; 25-20; 25-7 placing them into the championship match against Toccoa Falls College. The Cougars won the championship match in three straight sets, 25-14; 25-10; 25-22.
Clearwater’s offense dominated throughout the tournament with outstanding set selection by senior setter Elisabeth Ennis. Amanda Bucklin, Richelle Bucklin, and Emma Kile combined with over 10 kills per game. The CCC defense dominated the matches as well with some outstanding back row play by Danielle Heffernan and Amanda Ison. The four match sweep made Clearwater the 2010 South Regional Champions. This is the 18th time the Clearwater Volleyball Team has captured this title since joining the NCCAA II in 1990.
Clearwater seniors, Danielle Heffernan and Kayla Whiteley were given Honorable Mention All-Region honors. Senior Elisabeth Ennis, sophomore Richelle Bucklin, and junior Emma Kile, were all named to the First Team All-Region. Emma was also named the South Region’s Most Valuable Player of the Year.
The Lady Cougars finish out their regular season play on Tuesday, November 2 against NAIA opponent, Webber International University. The game is at home and starts at 7:00 p.m. The team will then be traveling back to Kissimmee, Florida to compete in the NCCAA II National Tournament November 11-13, 2010.
