Cougars Split on First Day

Cougars split on the first day of the Hillsborough Community College Halloween Tournament by taking St. John's Community College but falling to 16th nationally ranked Iowa Western Community College in what proved to be an exciting match. After the Cougars dropped the first two sets, they fought back hard winning sets three and four, forcing a fifth game against the much taller and stronger Iowa team. With some outstanding defense from senior Danielle Heffernan and the offensive hits of Emma Kile, the Clearwater team played well and was within two points of taking the match. Coach Denny said, "although we did not get the win, we played very well against a very good team. In the end, it could have gone either way. I am very pleased with the team's effort tonight. After dropping the first two sets, it would have been easy to give up but the team fought back hard to go five sets with this great program. This was an intense competitive match against a nationally ranked team and we played very well; it was a total team effort."

The Cougars will continue play tomorrow against Pensacola Community College and then face off later in the day against another top twenty NJCAA I ranked team, State College of Florida at Jacksonville.
