Cougars Win on the Road vs Ave Maria

(10/19/10) Clearwater Christian College defeated Ave Maria University (NAIA) 4-2 in men's soccer action Tuesday night. The Cougars jumped out early, scoring off a free kick in the 9th minute. Jeff Crews played the free kick over the top to Tyler Spraul who headed the ball to Brian Chidarikire who deftly finished with the outside of the foot to put the Cougars in the lead.

Ave Maria came right back, scoring minutes later on a goal from Luis Gonzales to even the match. Clearwater would push the lead to 2-1 when Jeff Crews scored off an assist from Drew Custer. Shortly before the half, Paul Vanaman would pad the lead, again off a corner kick from Custer to put the Cougars in command at 3-1 going into the half. Ave Maria's second goal came from Alberto Catullo midway through the 2nd half to close the lead to 3-2. Tyler Spraul would close the scoring for the Cougars in the 63rd minute, finishing on a penalty kick after Juan Robayo was taken down in the box.

All four goals for the Cougars came off set pieces, and Clearwater had an 8-2 advantage on corner kicks.

After the match, Coach Whitaker had this to say about the match: "This was a good win tonight against Ave Maria. While we weren't necessarily sharp in all aspects of the game, it was great to see quality execution on our restarts and battle to get the win."

The Cougars will play Thomas University (NAIA) on Thursday night at Glen Oaks Park at 6:30 p.m.
