Cougars Play Tough but Fall to Montreat

(10/15/10) Clearwater Christian College lost a hard-fought match to Montreat College (NC) by a final score of 1-0. Leonard Walker scored the game-winning goal in the 54th minute to push the Cavaliers to the win.

The game was very evenly played between the Cougars and Cavaliers. Clearwater come out strong in the first half, moving the ball crisply and creating several chances to go on top early. Montreat came back strong toward the end of the first half, putting the Cougar defense on their heels, but the 1st half ended scoreless.

The Montreat goal was a bit unlucky for the Cougars, as a clearance in the back rebounded off a Cougar defender and ended up at the feet of a Cavalier player at the top of the box who played a nifty ball past the last Clearwater defender to Walker who put the shot away for the Cavaliers.

Following the goal, the Cougars pushed hard to get the equalizer and were able to create several quality chances. Cougar forwards Drew Custer and Carl Lassegue worked hard and setup several opportunities for the Cougars, but each time the Cavaliers defenders came up big to preserve the win.

Coach Whitaker had this to say about the match: "We were disappointed not to win, but considering the quality of Montreat and all the injuries we continue to battle through, I thought our team played very well overall tonight. This game should really help us as we prepare for the post-season."

The shot total was indicative of the very even match as Montreat had a slight edge in shots at 12-11. The Cougars next match will be Tuesday, October 19 as they travel to Ave Maria (NAIA) to play the Gyrenes in a 6 p.m. match.
