Clearwater Wins In Overtime Against Atlanta

(9/11/10) The women's soccer team won their first conference game in overtime on Saturday against Atlanta Christian College, with a final score of 2-1. For the second straight day, the Cougars fell behind early in the game, with Atlanta Christian leading 1-0 after a very physical first half. The second half, however, was much more successful for the Cougars as they were able to possess the ball and create several scoring opportunities. Anna Lufkin put the Cougars on the board in the 68th minute when she scored from a throw in by Whitney Redemann, tying the score at one. After a full 90 minutes, the game remained tied.

Despite both teams' effort to create scoring chances, neither team was able to score in the first overtime. A tie seemed inevitable until Clearwater got a throw-in deep in their offensive end. Whitney Redemann threw the ball into the penalty area, and Rachel Niarchos scored the golden goal in the 106th minute, giving the Cougars the 2-1 victory. The women are looking for a second straight victory when they travel to Temple Terrace on Tuesday to face Florida College.
