Cougars Drop Tough Match to Mocs

The Clearwater men's soccer team lost 3-1 in a touch match with Florida Southern in Lakeland. The Mocs are a NCAA-II member and came into the match undefeated on the season. The Cougars took the lead in the 30th minute when midfielder Drew Custer found himself with room to maneuver just across the center line in Florida Southern territory. His long cross-field pass found Juan Robayo near the top right corner of the box, and Robayo’s blast beat the keeper to put the Cougars ahead. The lead didn’t last long, however, as the Mocs came back just a minute later to equalize on a header by Zac Hofstetter. Only minutes before the half, Florida Southern was awarded a penalty kick which was converted by Givi Kokaia to put the Mocs up 2-1 going into the half. Florida Southern added to their final goal of the match in the 52nd minute when Kokaia scored his 2nd goal of the match off a rebound in the Cougar box.

With the loss, the Cougars even their record on the season at 1-1 ahead of a key road trip up north to play region rivals Toccoa Falls College and Atlanta Christian College. Following the match, Coach Whitaker commented, "While I thought our effort tonight was good, we just made too many mistakes against a quality team like Florida Southern. There are so many things we can learn from playing a match like this that will help us later on in the season."
