Alumni Game 2010

(9/4/10) The annual Alumni Game proved to be a challenging battle for the Cougar socccer team, who finally came through with a 3-0 win against the alumni. The alumni team, which included a number of former All-Americans and All-Region performers, made it difficult for the Clearwater team to score. The Cougars came out determined, playing quality soccer throughout the first half, controlling the run of play and creating scoring opportunities, but were unable to capitalize in the first half.

Finally, in the second half of the game Carl Lassegue was fouled in the box, and Juan Robayo scored on the resulting penalty kick. Only a few minutes later, freshman Stephen McMahon scored on a volley from 25 yards out, putting the Cougars up 2-0. The final goal was scored on an own goal when a shot by Walter Scharf went off of an alumni player and into the net.

Coach Whitaker was excited to see many former players come back for the match, saying “It was great to see so many great Cougar players come back to play this year. They played us well, really frustrating our attack throughout the match. We need to really work on our play in the final 3rd, but overall it was a good match for us.”
