Coach Champion Takes Career Win #500 in Win Over Toccoa


(2/5/10) Clearwater, FL- The Clearwater Christian College men's basketball team came out on fire against Toccoa Falls College and held on to win 76-73 in a key region matchup on Friday night. The win was a milestone for Coach Champion as it was his 500th win of his coaching career. He is in his 37th year of coaching and his first year as men's basketball coach at Clearwater Christian College.

The Cougars came out with great intensity at the start of the game, fueled by a huge crowd of fans, and were able to build a double digit lead in the first few minutes of the game. Troy Hadlock, Lonzo Saunders, and Bryan Spears led a deadly inside / outside attack for the Cougars. Clearwater continued to build on their lead throughout the first half and went into the half up 48-28.

Toccoa came out on fire in the second half and began to chip away at the Cougar lead. They pulled within 2 points of the Cougar lead with less than 2 minutes to go before the Cougars' Troy Hadlock answered with 2 huge offensive plays, hitting a 3-point shot and scoring on a strong drive to keep the Cougars in control. With 8 seconds to go, the Eagles had the ball and ended up with a look from 3 to tie the game, but the shot was off and the Cougars celebrated a 76-73 win.

With the win, the Cougars improved their record to 9-9 on the season and 4-4 in region play. Lonzo Saunders led the Cougars with 20 points and 7 rebounds, and Troy Hadlock added 19 points. The Cougars take on Atlanta Christian College on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. in another important region contest.
