Cougars Open 2010 With OT Win Against Florida College
(01/14/10) Clearwater, FL- The Cougars opened the 2010 portion of their season off by hosting Florida College. Earlier in the season the FC Falcons defeated the Cougars by 1 point in the closing moments of the game, and CCC looked to prevent that late surge from the Falcons in this match up.
Clearwater came out fierce building a comfortable lead in the opening minutes. Timely Florida College shooting and their ability to run the floor helped them to climb back and keep them in the game back throughout its entirety. As the two teams continued to trade baskets throughout the second half of this game, time winded down, and the score still tied, the Falcons had an opportunity to win the game with possession of the ball and 41 seconds left on the clock. As the clock ticked away Florida College freshman guard Colin Houtson dribbled at the top of the key but was unable to get a shot off before the shot clock expired, giving the Cougars 5 seconds, in a tie game, to win at the end. The Falcons pressure on Coach Champion's designed play forced CCC to inbound to Lonzo Saunders who hoisted his first three of the season that hit the front of the rim and sent the game into overtime with a score of 70-70.
In overtime the Cougars intensity did not stop. Led by George Youstra and Todd Wahlberg the Cougars held FC to 9 points in the OT, while scoring 16 points to give Clearwater the win 86-79. The Cougars were led in scoring by George Youstra; 17 points and 14 rebounds, and Bryan Copeland; 17 points and 7 assists. Todd Wahlberg added 16 points, and Lonzo Saunders added 15 of his own in the Cougar victory.
The Cougars will host rival Pensacola Christian College on Saturday, January 16.
