Lady Cougars Battle Warner Royals
(12/10/09) Lake Wales, FL-The Lady Cougars played a very exciting game at Warner University on Thursday night. The final 68-63 score was created by fast and furious play from both teams. In traditional nail-biting form, the CCC-WU game boasted three lead changes and quick ball handling.
After a relatively even play, in the last few minutes of the game, WU hit a basket and brought the score to 62-59. CCC followed with three-pointer to tie the game. Unfortunately, not long after, WU went up 66-62 with a minute left. Although the Cougars cut the lead 66-63, WU scored the last 2 points of the game, winning 68-63.
An excellent technical game, CCC had 3 players in double figures. Richelle Bucklin had 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots. Lauren Leabhart had 12 points and 6 rebounds. Katie Mullens had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Amanda Ison had 9 points and 8 rebounds.
Katie Mullens, in what is becoming a normal occurrence, stunned the crowd in the 2nd half. After picking up a loose ball at half court, she went behind the back, between two defenders, took a couple more dribbles, shot in the lane, scored, and was fouled on the play. Her daring move sent the home crowd into buzz of excitement. Not to be outdone by her teammate, Richelle Bucklin executed another crowd-stunning play, this time a block—1 of 3 for the night. When a WU player broke free on her way to an unguarded basket, Bucklin came out of left field and blocked the “easy basket” ball, thwarting another WU score. Freshman Post player, Tina Bechtel, sat out her 2nd game due to a knee injury. Her absence showed as the Cougars were out-rebounded by the taller Royals, 57-37.
Coach Williams was proud of the game as one of the better team efforts of the season. The Lady Cougars will be in action again on Saturday at home against Montreat College.
