Clearwater Wins in Penalties to Advance to National Championship Game
(11/14/09) Clearwater Christian College defeated Ohio Christian University 4-3 in penalty kicks after 110 scoreless minutes in the NCCAA National Semifinal match in Kissimmee, Florida to advance to the National Championship Game on Monday night.
The Cougars were able to generate numerous chances through the match but struggled to finish as the Ohio defense came up strong. For the match, Clearwater was able to outshoot Ohio 26-7 but couldn't come up with the game winning goal.
Cougar goalkeeper Anthony DeRosse came up big for the Cougars in the win holding OCU scoreless in regulation and overtime and then making several huge penalty kick saves to preserve the win for the Cougars. The tense match went to sudden death penalty kicks after both teams finished tied 2-2 after the first 5 kicks. In the 7th kick, Lucas Hollenbach calmly slotted his kick past the Ohio keeper to put the Cougars up, and then DeRosse made another huge save to set off a huge celebration for the Cougars as they advanced to the championship match.
The NCCAA II Championship Match will be Monday, November 16 at 5:30 p.m. as Clearwater will again play Southeastern for the 4th time this season.
