Cougars Defeat Northland to Move into National Semifinals
(11/14/09) Clearwater Christian College defeated Northland International University 3-1 at the NCCAA National Tournament in Kissimmee, Florida to move into the NCCAA II National Semifinal. Adam Stallings opened the scoring with a great individual effort as he beat 3 NIU defenders and then calmly finished to put the Cougars up early in the first half.
Later that half, Mac Hildebrand scored directly off a corner when he bent the cross into the net to put the Cougars in control going into the half at 2-0. Minutes into the 2nd half, Northland got back into the match when David Bartholomew scored on a header off a Pioneer corner kick. The match went back and forth in the second half until Juan Robayo was able to get in behind the Northland defense where he hit a rocket by the keeper to put the game out of reach.
Coach James Whitaker commented after the match, “This was a tremendous win for our team against a very tough Northland team. It was a total team effort. Our defense played well against a strong Northland attack, our midfield really asserted itself as the match went on to take control of the game, and our forwards did very well putting their defense under pressure and creating numerous chances. We’re thrilled to be moving on into the National Semifinals.”
