Senior Night as Lady Cougars Host Webber Warriors
(11/3/09) Clearwater, FL- It was Senior Night at Clearwater Christian College as the Lady Cougars hosted the Webber International University Warriors. Seniors Alyssa Hallice, Christine Sugimoto, Rebekah Monhollen, and Ashley Lawson were honored before the game for their play and commitment to the team over their college career.
The Warriors, an NAIA program who won their strong Sun Conference last season and are currently ranked third this year, came out strong against the Cougars and took the first set 25-21. The second set was back and forth and the Warriors took a 21-17 lead, when Georganna Little came off the bench and scored an ace and 2 additional points to cut the Warriors lead to 21-20. The Lady Cougars defense stepped it up and ended up winning the set 25-23. This come from behind win in the second game swung the momentum back Clearwater’s way, as the crowd cheered on the Cougars, and drove CCC to dominating wins of 25-14 and 25-18 in the 3rd and 4th sets.
Clearwater was on their game, especially their serving, with only one error in 95 serves, including 8 serving aces. Alyssa Hallice had 4.5 kills per game followed by Emma Kile with 4.25, and Richelle Bucklin with 2.0. Liz Ennis had a phenomenal match setting with a 40% efficiency rate and 11 assists per game.
After the match Coach Denny said, “Against a good program like Webber, losing the first set is never good and then when we got behind in the second, things didn't look good for us, but during that second set, the crowd got ignited and really began cheering for us. That along with some good team defense turned that game around for us to take it 25-23, and that was the turning point of the match. A win like that right before Nationals is very helpful. Now we need to stay focused and go do our best at our national tournament.”
The Lady Cougars finished the regular season with a record of 39-4 and look to bring their dominating play to Nationals, as the second seed, in Kissimmee, Florida the weekend starting November 12, 2009.
