Lady Cougars Win Regional Semifinal to Advance to Championship Match

(10/29/09) Lakeland, FL- The Lady Cougars traveled to Lakeland for the opening match of the Regional Tournament on Friday. The first match for Clearwater was against Toccoa Falls.

During the regular season the Lady Cougars had lost both games to Toccoa Falls, 2-0 at Toccoa and 3-2 at home, but Coach Bates was confident in CCC's ability to match Toccoa Falls' skill and win the match.

During the first half both teams fought and traded scoring opportunities, with neither team able to capitalize and break a scoreless tie. However, early in the second half, Lady Cougars midfielder Anna Lufkin was taken down just outside the penalty box and Clearwater was awarded a direct kick from 20 yards out. Megan Creech took the direct kick, shot it past the diving keeper, off the post, and into the net to give the Lady Cougars a 1-0 lead in the game. After the go ahead goal, CCC's defense was able to hold off Toccoa Falls' attack and win the game 1-0.

The Lady Cougars will be in action again on Saturday, October 31 at 11:00 a.m. against Southeastern.
