Cougars Continue Tournament Success Against Kentucky Christian


(10/24/09) Atlanta, GA- Clearwater looked to continue their dominance in the ACC Invitational Tournament in their final match against Kentucky Christian. CCC, who was favored in the match, came out strong, keeping Kentucky on their heels with plenty of scoring opportunities.

Drew Custer scored the first goal of the game in the 12th minute, and minutes later Juan Robayo added a goal giving the Cougars a 2-0 lead in the early part of the game. Kentucky responded in the 22nd minute off a long shot by Jean Virgile to cut the Cougars lead in half. Towards the end of the half Juan Robayo got in behind the Kentucky defense and beat the keeper for his second goal of the game and sent the game into halftime with a 3-1 lead in favor of the Cougars. Throughout the game, the Cougars were able to continue creating scoring chances, but the Kentucky keeper came up big to keep his team in the game. Only 2 minutes into the second half Drew Custer scored his second goal of the game off a rebound increasing the CCC lead to 3. Within minutes of Custer’s goal, senior Danny Post scored an easy header off a perfect pass from Tyler Spraul following a beautiful combination with Bill Carlton. Kentucky would score another goal later in the game off a miscommunication by the Cougar defense, but the Cougars ended up winning the match by a final score of 5-2. For the match, the Cougars outshot the Knights 28-4.

At the end of the game Coach Whitaker said, “Overall, we played well. We controlled the match and created a number of great chances but struggled to find the finishing touch today against Kentucky. I feel like our team is playing our best soccer at the right time of year, and we’re really looking forward to the post-season.”

The Cougars will travel to Southeastern University on Friday, October 30 for the South Region Tournament. They will face Atlanta Christian in a 7 p.m. match on Friday with the winner moving on to play in the Region Championship on Saturday night at 6 p.m.
