Cougars Dominate Ohio Christian
(10/22/09) Atlanta, GA-Clearwater continued its weekend matches at the ACC Invitational Tournament with a national showdown with Ohio Christian. This was an important game for CCC, ranked 3rd in the nation, as they matched up with Ohio Christian, the top team in the Mid-East region and currently ranked 10th nationally. Ohio also came in with 2 of the top scoring players in the country, Emmanuel Harris and Dave Blamo.
CCC came out very motivated in this important national matchup scoring only 8 minutes into the match when Tyler Spraul scored off a cross from Danny Post. Ohio Christian answered right back minutes later when Kevin Street scored on a header off a corner after finding himself unmarked at the back post. Only seconds later, Juan Robayo had an emphatic answer when he took a cross from Danny Post, flicked the ball over an Ohio defender and hammered home the shot to put the Cougars back on top. Minutes later, Bill Carlton got into the act when he rose up and calmly headed the ball into the net off a cross from Juan Robayo. Ohio again answered back with another goal off a misdirected corner from Steve Vogelgesang to pull the Trailblazers back within 1 goal. The 1st half scoring barrage ended when Justin Fuller scored off a rebounded shot by Mac Hildebrand leaving the Cougars up 4-2 at the half.
As the 2nd half began, the Cougars again went on the offensive, looking to penetrate the Ohio defense. 13 minutes into the 2nd half, Tyler Spraul found himself free on the right flank and swerved a ball across which Drew Custer volleyed home from 18 yards out to put CCC up with a commanding 5-2 lead. Ohio didn’t give up and scored late in the 2nd half on a shot by Joe Ramsey from 30 yards out. CCC would close the scoring with 20 minutes to go when Mac Hildebrand finished off a cross from Adam Stallings. Clearwater had 6 different goal scorers and overwhelmed the Ohio defense with combinations, crosses, and quality finishing in the final 3rd.
After this back and forth match Coach Whitaker said, “I was happy especially with the way our offense came to play today, creating opportunities off crosses and combinations up top. This was an important win today for us against a nationally ranked opponent. We’re really starting to play our best soccer at the right time of the year, and we’re looking forward to the challenge of the post season.“
