Cougars Take Winning Ways on the Road


(10/15/09) Temple Terrace, FL- The Cougars traveled to Temple Terrace on Thursday, October 15 for a match against Florida College. CCC was looking to continue the success they had against FC earlier in the year, a 2-0 victory at home, and continue their dominating play.

CCC played very well early in the game, keeping possession, creating opportunities, and switching the point of attack. In the 30th minute, sophomore midfielder Daniel Mauro set up Juan Robayo to score the first goal of the game on a blast into the upper left corner of the net. Senior Danny Post played well at his outside mid position getting forward often to create opportunities for the Cougars. He was rewarded about 10 minutes into the 2nd half when he ran onto a slotted ball and beat the keeper to put the Cougars up 2-0. Florida College continued to play hard and kept themselves in the match. They were able to score off a long free kick when a rare miscue by the Cougar defense allowed FC to score to make it 2-1. The Cougars were again playing without defensive leader, and starting center back Matt Tewes who is still recovering from a head injury suffered against Toccoa Falls. With 10 minutes to go in the match, Adam Stallings scored on an athletic bicycle kick off a corner kick to give the Cougars a 3-1 lead. Florida College was able to score a very late goal with only seconds left in stoppage time to make the final score 3-2 in favor of CCC.

Midway through the 2nd half, the Cougars were dealt a scary blow when starting goalkeeper Anthony DeRosse, who is leading the country in goals against average giving up only .58 goals per game, was taken out by a Florida College defender on a corner kick and was unable to finish the match.

After the game, Coach Whitaker had this to say, “I was proud of the way our guys played tonight despite a lot of adversity. We have had a number of guys step up and give us great performances the past few weeks as we’ve played through injuries, and I think this should really help our team in the long run. The quality of our goals tonight was amazing. I was happy to see our attack rewarded for the time and effort we put in. FC played very hard tonight. They battled and played well against us, and we’re obviously happy to get another win.”

CCC is currently ranked #3 in the country and is leading the nation in fewest goals given up per game. The Cougars will now go on a 3 game road trip to Atlanta to play ACC in a makeup game on Wednesday, October 21 and then in a tournament against 2 teams from the Mid-East Region – Ohio Christian on October 23 and Kentucky Christian on October 24.
