Cougars Play Strong But Come Up Short Against Point Park
(10/10/09) The Lady Cougars knew they would have their work cut out for them as they faced Point Park University, a very strong NAIA program from Pennsylvania. Coach Bruno and his team have travelled down for several years to the Cougar tournament and usually take home the championship trophy. This year was no different.
The morning match set up the two undefeated teams of the tournament against each other. The first game was very close with scores going back and forth with both teams exchanging points. At 18-18 Point Park scored four unanswered points before the Cougars could capture a side out, eventually winning 25-20. The second game was again close with several lead changes. At 23-23, it appeared the Cougars might even the games, but again Point Park came up with two big kills to end game two. Clearwater fought back in game three, with big plays from middles Alyssa Hallice and Emma Kile, and some great defense from Ashley Lawson and Chrissie Sugimoto, winning 25-20. During game four the lead shifted back and forth several times and eventually Point Park gained some momentum and put away the final point for the match.
According to Coach Denny "this was a great match for us. It pushed us beyond what we are use to. Point Park is a very good team and well coached. Even though we played up to our game stats, Point Park was able to key in on a few areas we need work on and take advantage." Point Park finished up going undefeated during the entire tournament and were champions again for another year.
