Cougars Take Winning Ways to Naples
(9/29/09) Naples, FL - The Cougars traveled to face Ave Maria in a tough match up on September 29. This had the makings to be a very tough, physical game, between two very skilled teams.
Clearwater came out on the offensive in the first half but struggled to finish, until Bill Carlton found Juan Robayo with a great pass behind the Ave Maria defense. As Robayo was about to shoot he was fouled in the box which set CCC up with a penalty shot and a chance to take a 1-0 lead. Tyler Spraul took the PK and drove it into the back of the net for a Cougars goal.
During the early minutes of the second half, CCC continued to create scoring opportunities on free kicks and corner kicks but couldn’t finish. In the 25th minute the referee called Ave Maria for their second foul in the box which gave the Cougars another PK. Tyler Spraul, already having one goal on his stat sheet for the day, stepped up and confidently scored to put Clearwater up 2-0.
Once again, Coach Whitaker’s defense had a strong showing, holding the Gyrenes to only 8 shots in the game. The lone Ave Maria goal came on a PK which Alex Komninos scored. With only a one goal lead, the Cougars defense stepped it up and preserved the win.
After the game, Coach Whitaker had this to say, “This was another quality win against a good Ave Maria team. Our defense again played well and is becoming a real strength for our team. We were fortunate to create a number of good opportunities for ourselves but we struggled to finish tonight. In the 2nd half when they were pushing forward to try and get back in the match, we had several really good opportunities to put them away but didn’t capitalize. We need to learn to put a team away when we get those chances.”
The Cougars will be in action again on Friday, October 2, at Glen Oaks Park against Atlanta Christian.
