Cougars Travel To Southeastern for Second Rivalry Match Up

(9/15/2009) Lakeland, FL- The Cougars traveled to Lakeland, Florida for their second match against rival Southeastern on Wednesday, September 16. The crowd gathered for this much anticipated match up between these regional rivals. The Cougar faithful fans were looking for another victory after the 2-0 shutout in the opener of this rivalry match up, while the Southeastern fans were hoping the Fire’s offense could do something no team has done this season, defeat the Cougars.

Control of the ball went back and forth throughout the first half with both teams playing tremendous defense. CCC’s offense created a few opportunities in the first half, but the Fire defense came up with the stop. With the score tied at 0 at the start of the second half, the Cougars came out with a fierce, attacking offense looking to put the first goal on the board. The SEU defense continued to match Clearwater’s speed in getting to the ball and pushing it up field. The Cougar’s defense failed to clear the ball which set up SEU freshman Stephen Eppinger to score the first goal of the game in the 83rd minute.

In the last few minutes CCC’s offense pushed hard to even up the score and in the closing seconds, Tyler Spraul found Carl Lassegue in the open field with only the keeper to beat, but the referee’s whistle blew as the game ended before a shot could be taken. After the game Coach Whitaker stated, “This was another classic in the CCC-SEU rivalry with exciting, high-quality soccer by both teams. We knew coming in it would be a battle for the full 90 minutes and that the team that did the most with their opportunities would win. I thought overall our team played very well, but in the end we didn’t execute enough and finish our opportunities.” The Cougars will face off against Piedmont Baptist College on Friday, September 18 at 5 p.m.
