Clearwater Christian College Volleyball Teams Sweeps Labor Day Tournament
(9/7/2009) Clearwater, FL - The Clearwater Christian College volleyball team hosted their annual Labor Day tournament over the weekend and completed a clean sweep over all of their opponents, winning five straight matches in two days. The Cougars defeated NCCAA II Multnomah University, NAIA programs Kentucky Christian and Montreat College, NCAA II Oglethorpe University and finished the tournament with a win over Trinity College of Florida, who is a NCCAA II South region rival.
Only dropping one set the entire tournament, the Lady Cougars appear to be picking up where they left off last season when they were NCCAA II National Champions. Although there are only five returners from last year’s squad, several new players are already making significant contributions on this year’s team. Transfer Elisabeth Ennis brings two years of playing NCAA I, and can and has already played any position. Freshmen Richelle Bucklin and Amanda Ison both from Michigan are gaining starting roles and will only get better as they get more game experience.
According to Coach Denny, “this year our team will be much different than last. Senior Ashley Lawson has stepped into the setting role, and we have several more hitters this year. We are young, but I really like the spirit and work ethic so far and it is always great to win our own tournament.”
Senior Alyssa Hallice and freshman Richelle Bucklin were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Cougars are now 6-0 as they travel to Florida College on Tuesday night before heading up North to play several matches over the weekend.
