Women's Basketball Team Off to Nationals!
The Clearwater Christian College women’s basketball team has won the at-large bid for the NCCAA Division II 2009 National Championship to be held on March 10-14 at Kentucky Christian University in Grayson, Kentucky. The Lady Cougars had a good showing at the Regionals and will enter the tournament in the # 7 seed. CCC’s first game will be at 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, against #10 seed North Central University in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The Lady Cougars go into the tournament with a 16-12 record. Athletic Director James Whitaker said,
“We were thrilled to find out that the women’s basketball team earned an at-large bid for the NCCAA D-2 National Tournament. The team has had a great season and really made an unbelievable run at the end of the season. I think they have a great opportunity to do well in the tournament, and I’m excited that they have the opportunity to represent our college in this way.”
When asked about the 2008-2009 season, assistant coach Matt Kellogg said,
“This season has been a break-through season for the Lady Cougars. Our continued emphasis on intense, team defense culminated in winning the regular season Regional title and securing a bid to the National Tournament in Kentucky.
This team has tremendous leadership. Our two seniors (Jen Ramos and Laura Banks) have been reliable and effective down the stretch. Our other captain, Alyssa Hallice, has been consistent and down-right dominating at times this season! Our underclassmen have all contributed to our success and have stepped up big at different times. This truly is a unified team! We finished the season winning 8 out of our last 9 games. Above all, the team has sought to honor the Lord by trying to display Christ-likeness both on and off the court. Our ministry trip to Hope Children’s Home gave the ladies an opportunity to live their Christianity, and they were a blessing to some very special young people. We continually talk about how our testimony on the court might be the only “tract” some unsaved competitors ever see. We are so thankful to the Lord for the opportunity to attend the National tournament, and I am confident we will continue to honor the Lord with our basketball and see where that takes us – Lord willing, the championship game!”
