Volleyball Team Places First at Northwood Tournament
WEST PALM BEACH, FL—The Lady Cougars of Clearwater Christian College traveled south to participate in Northwood University's Invitational Tournament Friday, October 3 and Saturday, October 4. As the only non-scholarship team there, they proved that they can play with teams from higher leagues in an incredible team effort. CCC posted victories over Ave Maria, Florida College, and Northwood without dropping a set. In the championship, they faced NCAA II Palm Beach Atlantic.
During the championship, the Lady Cougars dropped the first game 20-25 but bounced back to take game two, 25-20. The next game went back and forth with both teams playing hard. Clearwater setter and team captain, Evie Compton, made some outstanding sets to Alyssa Hallice, Summer Jelsma, Emma Kile, and Rachel Farrell to eventually take the game 25-23. In the fourth game, the Cougars fell behind 5 points, but with solid defense led by Chrissie Sugimoto, the team fought back and eventually won the match, taking game four 25-19.
Coach Denny was thrilled with the team's effort this weekend. "I knew this would be a good, competitive tournament for us to match up our team with some scholarship schools. We played well with several members coming off the bench to contribute throughout the weekend."
Clearwater junior Alyssa Hallice was selected as the tournament MVP. She averaged over three kills and 1 block per game. She also served 96%.
The Lady Cougars continue a very successful season with a record of 24-1. Their next match is away on Tuesday, and then they will host their own tournament over the weekend.
