Volleyball Team Clinches Labor Day Tournament

The Lady Cougar volleyball team hosted their annual Labor Day tournament this year on August 29-30. Six teams participated in the tournament including Bluefield College from West Virginia, Asbury College from Kentucky, Philadelphia Biblical University from Pennsylvania, Ave Maria, Warner Southern and CCC all from Florida. Four of the six teams were NAIA scholarship programs with the other being a NCAA III program, but the Clearwater team did not let that intimidate them. On Friday, the Cougars won their matches defeating Ave Maria 3-0 and Philadelphia Biblical University 3-0. PBU is coached by former CCC volleyball Hall of Famer, Julie Hubbard, who graduated in 2001. Coach Denny remarked that “Julie is doing a great job and developing a very strong NCAA III program there at PBU. I am very proud of her accomplishments and her love for the Lord.”

On Saturday morning, the Lady Cougars continued in their winning ways by defeating Asbury, Bluefield and Warner Southern going 3-0 in each match. Coach Denny stated “that it has been a few years since we have won our Labor Day Tournament. Last year we came in second in a very close championship five gamer. I am very pleased with this year’s team’s unity and spirit on the court. It is just the beginning of our season, but I think we are going to be fun to watch.” Denny also added that she was very thankful for all the supportive fans who rallied behind the team throughout the tournament.

Clearwater had four players named to the All Tournament Team – senior setter, Evie Compton, junior libero, Chrissie Sugimoto, and middle hitters, Alyssa Hallice who is also a junior, and a new freshman to the team, Emma Kile.

Next on the schedule for the Cougars will be the NCCAA regional tournament September 5-6 in Kissimmee, Florida.
