Cougars Eliminated in South Regional Semi-Final

After rain postponed the NCCAA South Regional Semi-Final matchup against Toccoa Falls College, the game got underway on Saturday morning at Point University. The Cougars and Eagles both faced elimination coming into the semi-final.

The two teams traded zero's on the scoreboard through the first four innings, shutting down threats with solid pitching and defense. In the top of the fifth, the Eagles first eight batters reached and all of them eventually scored. After all was done in the top of fifth, they sent seventeen hitters to the plate, scored thirteen runs, collected six hits, were issued six free passes including four in a row at one point, and took a 13-0 lead. Second baseman Josh Ward collected a bases clearing triple in the inning, which totaled four RBI's for him in the fifth.

Clearwater's two runs came in the bottom of the fifth after freshmen Nick Abbruzzese and Austin Yeoman both hit back to back doubles to start the inning, with Yeoman collecting an RBI. Yeoman eventually scored after freshman Tim Reidy knocked him in.

TFC pushed three more runs across in the sixth to make it 16-2. Senior David Edwards finished 3-3 with two doubles, while fellow senior Joel Felten finished 1-3 in the last game of their careers.

Freshman Colby Retkowski threw a scoreless seventh for the Cougars. Freshman Brandon Gonzalez (1-8) took the loss. He retired the first twelve of fifteen Eagles he faced, including striking out the side in the second inning. He exited the game in the fifth, trailing just 2-0.

Edwards batted .545 (6-11) in the regional tournament, collecting two doubles, scoring one run, driving home one, and swiping three bases. Senior first baseman Joel Felten and sophomore right-handed pitcher Stephen Martin were named to the NCCAA South All-Region team, along with junior right-handed pitcher Will Kirby named as an Honorable-Mention in the South Region.

Clearwater's season ended with the 16-2 loss to Toccoa Falls College, finishing with a 16-28 record.

NOTES: Retkowski's scoreless inning was his third this year out of the bullpen (3/1 vs. Cedarville and 4/17 at Eckerd)...Yeoman batted .333 (7-21) with three doubles and three runs scored in his last eight games of the season...Edward's ninth multi-hit game this season, and third time collecting three hits...Felten's single was his forty-sixth hit this year, a team-high...the postponing of the Regional Semi-Final game was the ninth time a game was effected by rain this season, either by postponement or cancellation.
