Cougars Snap Skid Against Suns
The baseball team traveled to Johnson University (FL) on Saturday afternoon for the final two regular season contests. The Cougars entered the twin bill with an edge in the season series 2-1 against the Suns. The maroon and black got on top right away with a run in the first inning.
In the top of the first, senior Jefte Velez singled home fellow classmate David Edwards to give the Cougars a 1-0 advantage.
JUFL answered in their bottom half of the inning as third baseman Alejandro Mangelly crossed home on an error after doubling with one out earlier in the inning.
Taking a 1-1 tie into the second inning, Clearwater pushed across two runs which proved to be enough run support behind sophomore Stephen Martin (5-5). The Cougars continued their trend of starting rallies with no one on base with two outs. Freshman Austin Yeoman reached on an error, freshman Gabriel Gali singled, and Edwards singled for the second consecutive inning to load the bases. With the bases loaded and two outs, freshman Tim Reidy hit an RBI single to give CCC the lead. Velez collected his second RBI in as many plate appearances, reaching on an error, as Gali scored to make it 3-1.
Yeoman singled home sophomore Emmanuel Chmielewski in the top of the third inning as the Cougars took a 4-1 lead. The other run plated by CCC came on a double steal in the fifth as Chmielewski stole third and reached home on the same play by means of a throwing error.
Clearwater collected ten hits with Edwards, T. Reidy, and Chmielewski collecting two a piece. Chmielewski also scored a pair of runs.
Martin threw his eighth complete game of the season while picking up his fifth win. He gave up one run, none earned, eight hits, walked one, and struck out two. He faced the minimum in four different frames. The defense aided Martin by turning two double plays.
The 5-1 win improves Clearwater to 14-26.
NOTES: Clearwater's fourteenth victory this year surpasses the most regular season wins since 2004...Cougars swiped four bases (Edwards 1, Velez 1, Chmielewski 1, Stanley 1)...Martin's fifth win matches his total from 2013...Cougars snapped their longest skid of the season that reached seven games...seventh time CCC has held their opponents to one or less runs.
