Tritons Win Season Series After Cougars Fall 7-1 Thursday Night

Clearwater traveled to the Turley Athletic Complex at Eckerd College on Thursday evening for a rescheduled game from a rainout back on April 8. After the Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead, the Tritons scored seven unanswered runs en route to a 7-1 win.

The only run the maroon and black plated was on a bases loaded walk issued to senior David Edwards in the top of the second inning, which was his second of three passes on the night.

Eckerd tied the game after shortstop Rowdy Andrews stole second, advanced to third on an overthrow, and reached home on the same play after another throw entered the out of play area.

The 1-1 tie was broken in the bottom of the sixth inning after two runs came in on a single and sacrifice fly from the Tritons offense. They added four more in the seventh inning putting the game out of reach.

Freshman Mike Calabrese (1-1) made his first collegiate start on the mound and threw 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, only allowing two hits, walking two, with no strikeouts. He faced the minimum in the second, fourth, and fifth innings.

Clearwater left the bases loaded in both the top of the second and top of the fifth. Freshman Trevor Lancaster went 2-3 and reached base three times in his four plate appearances. Edwards three walks on the evening puts him at thirty-one on the season.

The loss drops CCC to 13-24 and the Tritons improve to 22-17 overall (8-10, Sunshine State Conference).

Clearwater will be on the road tomorrow afternoon at Johnson University-Florida with the first pitch scheduled for 3:00pm. The game will be played at the Houston Astros Spring Training Complex.

NOTES: Velez stole his tenth bag of the season...Cougars have five players that have reached double digits in stolen bases, currently at eighty-one as a team...first time since 2011 that Eckerd College has taken the upper hand in a season series with Clearwater.
