Clearwater's Rally Not Enough in One Run Loss
The series resumed on Saturday afternoon at Toccoa Falls College as Clearwater looked to gain an edge in the series. The Cougars trailed 6-2 in the top of the seventh inning and put together a rally, but fell short 6-5.
Senior Joel Felten came up with one out and the bases loaded in the seventh trailing 6-2. He hit a bases clearing double to put Clearwater within one and the tying run on second base but was left stranded to end the game.
Clearwater jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, only to see it slip away in the later innings. Freshman Nick Abbruzzese hit a two RBI double in the second inning to give the Cougars the advantage.
Sophomore Stephen Martin (4-5) got through some tough jams over the first three innings, stranding six runners. He exited the game in the fourth due to injury and cramping, and the Eagles scored three runs in that inning. The big hit for the Eagles that opened it up was once again off the bat of first baseman Ronnie Stewart, which came in the sixth inning with two outs. Stewart hit a two RBI double, collecting his eighth RBI in the first two games of the series and giving the Eagles the 6-2 lead.
Martin threw 3 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs, yielding eight hits, walking one, and striking out three.
Felten finished 2-4 with three RBI's leading the Cougars offensively.
The loss drops Clearwater to 13-21. Toccoa improves to 22-10 with the 6-4 win.
NOTES: Just the third time Martin has allowed more than three runs in a start this season...Felten's three RBI's put him at fourteen on the season and is now six RBI's and three SB's away from a 20/20 RBI/SB season...Clearwater's seventh one-run loss this season...Cougars stranded eight runners.
