Eagles Take First Game of Weekend 13-3

Clearwater traveled to Toccoa Falls College for the first of a three game series on Friday afternoon in Georgia. With the game tied 2-2, the Eagles put together an eight-run sixth inning to take a commanding lead, putting it out of reach for the Cougars.

TFC scored in the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 advantage after first baseman Ronnie Stewart hit an RBI single with two outs. Stewart finished 4-4 with five RBI's, a walk, and a run scored.

The Cougars responded right away in the top of the second after freshman Trevor Lancaster laced an RBI single into the gap scoring teammates Joel Felten and Emmanuel Chmielewski. Felten led off the inning with a double and Chmielewski followed right after with a single.

Toccoa knotted the score at 2-2 in the fourth inning after shortstop Jordan Couillard hit an RBI single that scored center fielder Justin Key, who walked three times in the game.

With the game still tied in the bottom of the sixth, second baseman Josh Ward was issued a free pass from Cougars starting pitcher Will Kirby (4-4) to start the inning. After a throwing error that advanced Ward to third base, Couillard hit another RBI single, this time giving Toccoa a 3-2 lead. The Eagles went on to score seven more runs in the inning, including a two run home run from Stewart, who also had a two RBI double in the inning, collecting four RBI's of his own in the sixth.

The Cougars other lone run came in the next half inning after Lancaster and freshman Nick Abbruzzese hit back to back doubles, with Abbruzzese's double scoring Lancaster to make it 10-3.

The Eagles scored three more runs and captured game one of the weekend with a 13-3 victory.

Kirby threw five complete innings, allowed four runs, three earned, scattered eight hits, walked six, and punched out five in the loss.

Lancaster and Abbruzzese each had two hits on the day.

The Cougars are now 13-20 and Toccoa advances to 21-10.

The weekend series will pick back up tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader scheduled for a 1:00pm start at Toccoa Falls College.
