CCC Sweeps Doubleheader Led By Martin's Complete Game

In game two on Friday afternoon, Clearwater received their second complete game of the day, this time from sophomore Stephen Martin.

Martin (3-3) threw seven innings, surrendered seven hits, allowed one earned run, and retired six on strikes.

The Cougars pushed two runs across in the fourth inning to draw first on the scoreboard. After senior Jefte Velez was walked and senior Joel Felten was hit by a pitch to start the inning, the next two hitters were retired on strikes. Velez and Felten pulled off a double steal, putting both in scoring position. Freshman Trevor Lancaster hit an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. Freshman Nick Abbruzzese followed Lancaster with an RBI single of his own, scoring Felten, and giving CCC a 2-0 advantage.

After Tennessee Temple scratched a run across in the top of the fifth, Clearwater bounced back in the bottom half with two of their own. Velez drove in fellow senior David Edwards on a sacrifice fly and freshman Nathan Stanley scored on an error later in the inning, giving the Cougars a 4-1 advantage. The other lone run from CCC came in the bottom of the sixth after Edwards hit an RBI triple with two outs that scored Lancaster, who doubled to start the inning.

Lancaster finished 2-3 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Edwards went 2-4 with a triple, RBI, and a run scored.

The 5-1 victory advances Clearwater to 11-16 overall and a 2-0 series lead with TTU, who is now 6-14 on the year.

Game three of the weekend series is slated to start at 10:00am on Saturday morning at Jack Russell Stadium.
