Alderson-Broaddus Snaps Cougars Win Streak

Clearwater entered Tuesday night's game against Alderson-Broaddus University (WV) with a five game winning streak. Early on, it looked like the maroon and black would have a good chance to continue the streak after taking a 3-0 lead, but the Battlers were able to put across nineteen runs on seventeen hits, and scored in each of the last four innings.

In the bottom of the first, senior David Edwards, who collected his twentieth and twenty-first walks of the season, was issued a free pass to start the inning. Freshman Tim Reidy reached on an error, putting runners at first and second with no outs. After a successful sacrifice bunt, Edwards scored on a passed ball, and then senior Joel Felten drove him T. Reidy on an RBI single.

The Cougars plated another run in the bottom of the second. Freshman Nathan Stanley was walked with two outs, he stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a passed ball, extending the lead to 3-0.

Alderson-Broaddus got things going in the top of the third, as the first six batters of the inning reached base, and five of them eventually scored in the inning. Left fielder Cody Cowart, right fielder Jeff Conley, first baseman Kirby Clemens, and designated hitter Travis Hurley each collected RBI's in the inning. The Cougars turned a 4-6-3 double play in the inning to minimize the damage. After the top of the third, ABU led 5-3.

Felten was hit by a pitch with one out in the bottom of the fifth and advanced to second on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt. Sophomore Emmanuel Chmielewski moved him over to third on a 4-3 putout and freshman Austin Yeoman singled him home, cutting the Battlers lead to 5-4. Yeoman finished 2-4 with a walk and an RBI. Yeoman has collected at least one RBI in each of the last five games and is carrying a seven game hitting streak.

After already scoring two runs in the top of the sixth, Cowart gave the Battlers some more breathing room with a two RBI double, giving them a 9-4 lead. Cowart finished 2-7, reaching base three times, scoring two runs, collecting two doubles, and knocking in three.

Stanley hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth for Clearwater, making it a 9-5 game. Stanley finished 2-2 with three walks, two runs scored, one RBI, and a stolen base.

ABU put ten more runs across in the last three innings of the game, putting the game out of reach. The other lone run CCC scored came in the eighth inning after Chmielewski drove in T. Reidy with his twelfth RBI of the season.

Sophomore Brandon Gonzalez (1-5) took the loss for Clearwater. Zach Glaze earned the win for the Battlers, throwing five innings, allowing four runs, yielding five hits, walking five, and striking out one.

After the 19-6 loss, Clearwater drops to 9-12 on the year and Alderson-Broaddus improves to 5-4. The Cougars will open up a three game weekend on Friday night against St. Francis University (IL) at Frank Tack Park with the first pitch scheduled for 7:00pm. The weekend will continue with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon against region foe Toccoa Falls College at 1:00pm, also at Frank Tack Park.
