Cougars Win Game One Against Suns 5-4


Johnson University (FL) traveled to Clearwater on Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader at Frank Tack Park. The Cougars combined for nine hits, three free passes, and ten stolen bases.

The maroon and black scored first for the third straight game. In the bottom of the first, senior David Edwards led off with a walk. After Edwards stole second base, freshman Tim Reidy hit an RBI single, which extended his hitting streak to eight games, and gave Clearwater a 1-0 lead. Freshman Austin Yeoman, who finished 1-3, hit an RBI single that scored T. Reidy to make it 2-0. The last run of the inning came off a double steal when senior Joel Felten took home and Yeoman safely stole second. Felten had reached on a single of his own earlier in the inning.

In the bottom of the second, freshman Nathan Stanley got things going with one out hitting a single to left field. He stole second and third, and scored on an RBI double off the bat of T. Reidy, driving in his second run of the game.

Taking a 4-0 lead into the fourth, Edwards hit an RBI single that scored Stanley from second base, extending Clearwater's lead to 5-0. Edwards finished 2-3 with a walk, a run scored, an RBI, and two stolen bases.

The Suns plated three runs in the top of the sixth inning, with the big hit of the inning coming from third baseman Alejandro Mangelly who drove in two runs on a single, cutting their deficit to 5-3. JUFL scored their other run in the inning on a fielder's choice.

Sophomore starting pitcher Stephen Martin (2-2) took a 5-3 lead into the top of the seventh inning. After surrendering a solo home run to left fielder Ty Cherry, Martin retired the next three hitters in a row to seal the 5-4 win. Martin threw his fourth complete game of the year, allowing six hits, four earned runs, walking none, and retiring seven on strikes.

Cherry led the Suns offensively going 2-4 with a home run, RBI, and a run scored. Shortstop Caleb Richard also had a multi-hit game, finishing 2-3 with a run scored.

Clearwater had three players (Edwards, T. Reidy, Felten) with multi-hit performances in game one.

The win improves Clearwater's overall record to 8-11 and Johnson University (FL) drops to 0-14.
