Cougars Win 4-2 Behind Kirby's Complete Game
Clearwater hosted Ohio Valley University (WV) on Friday night at Frank Tack Park. The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth, the Scots tied it in the top of the seventh, and Clearwater plated three runs in the bottom of the eighth, before heading into the ninth.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars once again came through with no runners on base and two outs. Senior Joel Felten started things with a single up the middle and was followed by sophomore Emmanuel Chmielewski's single, which advanced Felten to third base. Freshman Austin Yeoman came through with a two out RBI single that scored Felten. The threat was ended in the fourth when Chmielewski was thrown out at home on a passed ball.
The Fighting Scots climbed back in the top of the seventh after left fielder Logan Dan hit an RBI double that scored second baseman Mason Rine, tying it 1-1.
Senior David Edwards led off the bottom of the eighth with a single for the Cougars. Freshman Tim Reidy reached base on a throwing error from the Scots third baseman, which advanced Edwards to third. Freshman Trevor Lancaster hit an RBI single that plated Edwards and advanced T. Reidy to third. Felten collected an RBI, scoring T. Reidy on a single. Chmielewski's second hit of the night was an RBI double that scored Felten from first, making it a 4-1 game. In the eighth inning, Clearwater strung together four base hits, three runs scored, and was issued one free pass.
Ohio Valley scored their second run of the game after pinch hitter Max Brown knocked in Hugo Oliveras on an error, cutting their deficit to 4-2. With the tying runs on base, Cougars starting pitcher Will Kirby retired right fielder Christian Hall on strikes, which was his tenth strikeout of the night.
Kirby (2-2) threw his second complete game of the season, allowing three hits, two runs, none earned, one walk, and punching out ten. He faced the minimum in six of the nine innings. The Scots starting pitcher J.R. Davis did not get a decision after completing six innings, scattering four hits, allowing one run, walking three, and striking out two. Relief pitcher Dakota Taylor took the loss for OVU.
Oliveras, the Fighting Scots center fielder, who carried a hot bat heading into Friday night, went 1-3 with a run scored and reached base twice.
Felten led the Cougars offensively going 2-2 with an RBI, two runs scored, a stolen base, and two walks. Chmielewski finished 2-4 with an RBI and a double. Lancaster and Yeoman each collected an RBI each.
The Cougars are now 7-11 on the year and the Fighting Scots drop to 0-5.
