Edwards Walk Off Triple Finishes 13-12 Thriller


In game two there were a combined twenty-nine hits and twenty-five runs between the two teams. The Cougars trailed 12-10 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, creating an exciting finish at Frank Tack Park.

While trailing 12-10 with two outs and no runners on base in the bottom of the last inning, the excitement continued from what was already a shootout. Freshman Michael Calabrese was hit by a pitch to lead it off. Freshman Matt Schaefer was walked on four straight pitches, putting the tying run on base with two outs. Then, with runners at first and second, freshman Nathan Stanley beat out an infield single to load the bases. With the bases full and trailing by two with two outs, senior David Edwards laced a pitch down the right field line clearing the bases, scoring all three runners, and giving Clearwater a 13-12 come from behind walk off victory.

Grace College got on the board early in the second game of the doubleheader. First baseman Aaron Christenbury hit a sacrifice fly and Jacob Bloom hit a two run home run to left field, giving the Lancers a 3-0 lead.

It didn't take long for the Cougars to respond, plating four runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Freshman Tim Reidy hit an RBI double scoring Edwards, senior Joel Felten hit an RBI single, and freshman Austin Yeoman hit a sacrifice fly to center field scoring sophomore Emmanuel Chmielewski, who reached earlier on a single. The other run come on a throwing error when Chmielewski stole second, and Felten took home on the error.

Carrying a 4-3 margin into the bottom of the second, the Cougars added two more. With two outs and no runners on base, Edwards reached on an error, and stole second. T. Reidy then hit his second RBI double of the game, plating Edwards. T. Reidy scored on a passed ball later in the inning, making it 6-3.

Freshman Nick Abbruzzese, Stanley, and Edwards each reached base on singles to lead off the bottom of the fourth. T. Reidy collected his third RBI of the night on a sacrifice fly, scoring Abbruzzese and advancing Stanley to third base. Freshman Trevor Lancaster hit another sacrifice fly, scoring Stanley, extending the lead to 8-3.

The Lancers wouldn't let up offensively and put eight runs across in the top of the fifth inning, taking an 11-8 lead. They sent twelve hitters to the plate, recording eight base hits. In the inning Christenbury went 2-2 with two RBI's on a single and a triple, and also scored a run for Grace College.

Trailing 11-8 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Cougars led off the inning with three singles in a row. Freshman Matt Schaefer singled in his first plate appearance of the night, followed by Stanley and Edwards to load the bases. T. Reidy collected his fourth RBI on his second sacrifice fly of the night, cutting the deficit to 11-9. Stanley advanced to third on the play as well, which allowed Lancaster to bring him home on a 6-3 putout in the next at bat, making it 11-10.

Grace College brought home one more run in the top of seventh, adding an insurance run on RBI single from Joey Hickerson. Hickerson finished 2-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, while reaching base three times.

Edwards bases clearing, walk off triple, in the bottom of the seventh capped off the shootout with a 13-12 win for Clearwater. Edwards went 3-4 with two runs scored, three RBI's, and a stolen base.

T. Reidy finished 2-2 with two doubles, four RBI's, and two runs scored. Stanley capped off his night going 3-4 with three runs scored. Schaefer went 1-1 with a walk and two runs scored in his two plate appearances.

Stanley (1-0) earned the win on the mound after throwing two innings in relief, allowing three hits and one run, while not walking a hitter. Sophomore Stephen Martin started the game for Clearwater throwing four innings, allowing three runs, giving up five hits, walking none, and striking out four. He left the game with an 8-3 lead.

The win improves Clearwater's record to 6-11 overall and Grace is now 0-4 on their young season.

The Cougars will host Ohio Valley University on Friday night at 7:00pm at Frank Tack Park, and will host Johnson University (FL) on Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader at Frank Tack Park scheduled for a 1:00pm start.


NOTES: T. Reidy's four RBI's is a career game-high....first walk off for Clearwater since last season on March 2, 2013 against Goshen College in a 6-5 win...Stanley picked up his first collegiate win in his first collegiate appearance...last time Clearwater scored at least thirteen runs in a game dates back to March 9, 2012 in a 19-6 win against Alice Lloyd College...T. Reidy and Felten have both hit safely in six consecutive games...Edwards has been walked at least once in the last ten of eleven games, recording fifteen free passes over that span.
