Cougars Roar Past Grace in Game One 8-4
Grace College (IN) traveled to Clearwater on Tuesday evening for a midweek doubleheader at Frank Tack Park. The Cougars offense plated eight runs on eleven hits behind quality pitching, which led to an 8-4 victory.
CCC scored first in the contest, plating three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman Nathan Stanley collected two RBI's on a triple, which scored freshman Michael Calabrese and freshman Nick Abbruzzese. Senior David Edwards drove home Stanley on a RBI single, giving Clearwater a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third inning, senior Joel Felten singled and later scored on an error. Calabrese collected his second hit of the game in as many at bats, which scored freshman Austin Yeoman extending the Cougars lead to 5-0.
The Lancers responded in the top of the fifth inning, scoring four runs, and cutting the deficit to 5-4. Second baseman CJ Swartz collected two RBI's on a single, center fielder Jacob Bloom hit an RBI single, and left fielder Wyatt Clemens hit an RBI single as well. Clemens finished 2-3 with an RBI.
Without a base hit in the bottom of the fifth, the Cougars crossed Abbruzzese across the plate to give the maroon and black a 6-4 lead. In the sixth inning, Felten and freshman Trevor Lancaster both scored, making the score 8-4.
Sophomore Stephen Martin shut down the Lancers in the seventh on a 1-2-3 inning, giving Clearwater an 8-4 win. Sophomore Brandon Gonzalez (1-4) earned the win, throwing four innings, allowing four runs, three earned, scattering five hits, yielding three walks, and striking out two.
Freshman Tim Reidy went 2-4, reaching base three times. Lancaster finished 2-2 with a walk and a run scored. Stanley collected a pair of hits finishing 2-3 with two RBI's and a run scored. Calabrese went 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
The win improves Clearwater to 5-11 overall. Grace drops to 0-3 with the loss.
NOTES: Abbruzzese has now reached safely in twelve of his last nineteen plate appearances...Gonzalez picked up his first collegiate victory...Clearwater successfully laid down two sacrifice bunts and stole three bases...ten of the twenty-outs by the Cougars defense were on ground ball outs, including one double play...CCC scored at least two runs in three separate innings.
